Private investigator’s wild testimony about NASCAR driver’s salacious hotel encounter leads to $850K bill

Gentleman, start your engines …

Ladies, too.

North Carolina’s ‘Homewrecker Law’ cost a NASCAR driver nearly $1 million last last month, and now we got our smoking gun. Not that we needed one. But, it’s still good to know the right team won.

Truck Series driver Jennifer Jo Cobb, 53, was slapped with a $850,000 bill after a court sided with the now ex-wife of the man she “willfully, intentionally, and deliberately seduced, enticed and alienated the affections” of back in 2021.

The man? Longtime NASCAR spotter, Clayton Hughes.

Jim Rorie, a private instigator hired by Hughes’ wife, told a court that he heard Jo Cobb and Clayton Hughes having “rambunctious” intercourse in a Comfort Inn in Oct. 2020 after he followed him to the hotel via a tracking device planted on his car.

A lot of times it’s hard to know exactly what you’re hearing through a hotel wall.

This was apparently NOT one of those times, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the Daily Mail.

“There was no doubt about what I was hearing,” he told a court, adding that he heard “the squeaking of the bed, quite a bit of that, female tones moaning — and occasionally a male’s voice.”

Well, this is how the sausage is made, folks. This is how PI’s make a living. It’s why they get paid the big bucks …

To track down Toyota Camry’s in the hills of Martinsville, Virginia, and sit in a Comfort Inn all night listening to what sounds like one heck of an evening.

“As the squeaking continued, the tones of a male moaning and saying, ‘Oh f–k’ and ‘Oh my God’ were distinctly heard,” Rorie continued. “I believe there was one point where I heard the female yell, ‘Don’t stop.'”

Adultery is a moral no-no all over the country (at least it should be), but it’s a legal no-no in certain states. North Carolina is one of them.

Stacey Hughes filed a lawsuit against Jo Cobb in 2024, accusing her of having an affair with her husband months before their divorce in 2021.

Hughes accused Cobb of alienation of affection, which is basically a civil tort that allows individuals to sue another for intentionally spurring the end of a marriage.

Hughes also filed a second claim, saying her husband “dishonored” the couple’s “marital bed,” which seems like a fair conclusion to make given the testimony from the private investigator. Didn’t sound like anything honorable was going on in that Comfort Inn.

North Carolina’s ‘Homewrecker Law,’ as it’s been aptly dubbed, was triggered, and last month a Davidson County judge ordered Jo Cobb to pay $50,000 for alienation of affection, and $800,000 for criminal conversation

For those who aren’t up-to-date on their legal terms, criminal conversation is a civil lawsuit that allows a spouse to sue a third party for having sex with their partner while the marriage is still intact. Each act of adultery can give rise to a separate claim for criminal conversation.

Unfortunately, it sounds like there were plenty of acts to choose from.

Cobb has 31 NASCAR O’Reilly Series starts over a 15-year career, and a whopping 234 Truck Series starts. She finished sixth at Daytona in 2011.
