Caring for Elder Family Members With Dignity

Our parents have lived their whole lives with dignity, so as they age and start developing health issues that restrict their movement, they feel hesitant to share the new struggles with their children. In that case, children should try to notice the changes in their parents’ habits and how they move throughout the day, and commute with them regularly to provide the right kind of care.

While offering support, make sure your parents feel cared for, not like a burden on you. Here are some ways you can support your aging parents while helping them feel respected and valued.

Effective Communication

When you first find out how your parents are struggling to perform even the most basic of daily activities, you should try to talk to them instead of planning all the way to help. Actually, communication is the first step in offering help. Your parents will share details about their daily struggles, and based on that information, you will be able to provide better care for them.

If you think you cannot provide the assistance they need, you may consider moving them to a senior care facility such as La Marea. The facility has many residents struggling with more or less the same issue, so they will provide the right kind of care to your parents. But moving to senior living should be a mutual decision; you should value their opinion on this matter and make the final arrangements only when they are fully ready to move into their new home.

Create a Safe Environment

Noticing health issues and addressing them in a timely manner is often considered the only way to provide care, but we often forget that our loved ones have emotional needs, too. Even if they get the right kind of medication and diet plan, they will still need your company.

If you can’t give them the time, you should encourage them to move to a senior living facility like La Marea. They will find many like-minded people there who can offer company. The homes are also designed to ensure safety. So overall, your goal should be to provide a safe environment for aging parents, whether at home or in senior care facilities.

Practice Patience and Compassion

Knowing the basics of caring for an aging parent will help you make the right decisions to ensure they receive proper medical checkups and live in a safe environment. During this process, you also have to stay calm and speak to your parents in a soft tone.

Due to aging-related changes in their bodies, older adults often become irritated. They struggle to understand your concern, so you will have to explain calmly why that surgery is required for their health and why moving to senior living is a practical option.

Conclusion

Caring for an aging person can feel overwhelming, but following these steps can make it easier. So the first step is active listening: try to understand their concerns. Next, observe their situation, and then offer help or find the right kind of help for them.

Finally, value their opinion in all their health-related and other matters. Provide care with love, because more than anything else, aging parents need respect from their children.
