Lane Kiffin couldn't help himself, takes petty shot at Ole Miss fans after LSU loss in his return to Oxford

Lane Kiffin has picked up his fair share of criticism over the years, but if there is one thing no one can argue about the man, it is that he isn’t going to change his personality for the sake of the situation. One specific soundbite he delivered after his return to Ole Miss went the wrong way for him and his LSU Tigers perfectly encapsulates that.

The Week 3 matchup between LSU and Ole Miss delivered in every way imaginable, which isn’t often the case in such highly anticipated events. From the build-up of Kiffin stepping back on the field he coached on for six seasons, to the atmosphere inside the stadium, and to the game itself, it was the epitome of college football.

The Rebels jumped out to a commanding 24-7 lead in the first half before the Tigers scored 17 unanswered points to knot things up and set the scene for a fourth quarter that could only be described as pure cinema.

LANE KIFFIN WALKED BACK INTO OXFORD AS THE MAIN CHARACTER, BUT OLE MISS AND PETE GOLDING STOLE HIS SPOTLIGHT

Ultimately, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, the best player on the field, gave his team the lead back with just over six minutes remaining before LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt threw an interception in the end zone with a minute left to go to seal the deal for the Rebels, 32-24.

Speaking with the media after his team’s loss, Kiffin admitted it was emotional returning to Ole Miss both on game day itself and in the buildup to the top 10 showdown. Yet, despite the team he left on the eve of last season’s College Football Playoff getting its revenge against his LSU Tigers, Kiffin couldn’t help but take a subtle shot at Ole Miss fans.

“You walk into a storm, ya know,” Kiffin said, describing the atmosphere inside the stadium at Ole Miss. “That’s what happens a lot of times in these games, you see it all the time. It’s a buzzsaw.

“You walk in, it’s a buildup. The stadium is full an hour early; I guess I had to leave to get them to do that. So, you’re welcome,” Kiffin concluded with a smile.

‘HE’S DUST’: OLE MISS STUDENTS RIP LANE KIFFIN AS LSU COACH PREPARES FOR HATRED IN OXFORD

While Kiffin’s comment may have been tongue-in-cheek, he coached in plenty of games during his tenure at Ole Miss when the student section and stadium were near capacity well before kickoff.

Saturday’s contest, with Kiffin returning to Oxford, provided for one of the most unique setups in college football history, adding an infinite amount of juice to the game, but throwing a jab at the fans who supported you until the final minute of your six-year tenure was an interesting choice was an interesting choice by Kiffin.

Then again, Kiffin can’t exactly return to good graces with Rebel fans; he doesn’t exactly have anything left to lose.

Ole Miss announced on Saturday that it set a new all-time attendance record at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium with 70,033 fans in the stands.
