Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves got the last word on Saturday night after Ole Miss defeated LSU in Lane Kiffin’s highly anticipated return to Oxford.

The Tigers climbed back into the game in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns to bring the game to within three points. LSU tied the game with a field goal early in the fourth quarter. But Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss scored on a 14-yard run with 6:14 left. Ole Miss added a two-point conversion to go up eight points.

Ole Miss held on for the 32-24 victory.

Reeves added insult to injury with a post on X.

“What does a $54 million buyout for the old coach, a $91 million contract for the new coach, and a $50 million roster get you?” he wrote. “An a-s whipping in Oxford, Mississippi!”

The governor was referring to Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss to LSU and the way the Tigers’ roster was constructed in the offseason.

It was a part of the trash talking that occurred throughout the week. Kiffin, himself, was met with middle fingers and boos when he stepped back into Vaught Hemingway Stadium.

“I’m glad it’s over. This was an emotional game for a lot of reasons,” Kiffin said. “A lot of life-changing experiences here. A lot of really good people that helped me through some really hard times.

“Sometimes I don’t act like it, but I’m a human, too. Congrats to those guys. They played really well. They deserved to win.”

Chambliss said the win meant more than some of the other games he’s played in his collegiate career.

“It meant more than other games,” he said. “I’m finally glad we got that one out of the way because emotions were really high for this game.”

Ole Miss is expected to leapfrog LSU in the next AP poll. The Rebels came in ranked No. 8 in the country, while LSU was No. 7.
