Tim McGraw shared his insight into what the “most difficult” part of marriage is, after being married for 30 years.
During a recent interview with Esquire’s “What I’ve Learned,” the 59-year-old country star shared that as his three children with Faith Hill grow up and start their own lives, the two of them find themselves “stepping into a new phase of life.”
“Sometimes that requires not talking about it and just moving on through,” he said. “And sometimes it requires sitting down and talking about it a little bit, saying, ‘Hey, we need to check in a little bit and see where we’re at now that everything’s changing.'”
He went on to say that “points of change in a marriage” can come “regularly throughout a long marriage,” and these can often be “the most dangerous parts, I think, for a marriage.”
GREAT RELATIONSHIPS HAVE 3 ESSENTIAL INGREDIENTS — AND ONE FACTOR THAT CAN RUIN EVERYTHING

“And not talking about things and not clearing the air and not sort of rediscovering each other at every chance you get,” he said. “I think the best time to dive into each other and really rediscover each other at the worst times when you think things are falling apart.”
In his opinion, it is important to have a strong foundation and “to always go back to it,” because “the longer you wait to go back to it,” there may come a time where it becomes “unreachable, and you never can cross that divide.”

McGraw and Hill tied the knot in October 1996 and have been a country music power couple ever since. Over the course of their marriage, they have welcomed three daughters together; Gracie, 29, Maggie, 28, and Audrey, 24.
They have also recorded multiple duets together during their relationship, including “It’s Your Life,” the Grammy Award-winning “Let’s Make Love” and “Speak to a Girl,” which was featured on their first-ever collaborative album, “The Rest of Our Life.”

In an Instagram post shared on their 30th anniversary, McGraw looked back on their wedding day, writing that as he stood in his aunt’s backyard he “watched my future walk towards me” and “In front of our closest family and friends, I was bound to the most beautiful soul.”
“A lady that was glowing in my eyes, expanding my heart, and giving me all the love she had. I was and still am bewildered by her capacity to love, forgive, nurture and be full of joy and laughter,” he wrote. “She is a gift to the world for sure, however, for us, we get Her, all of her. And I (and my girls) know who is ours, completely. It’s difficult to describe what she means, she is the center of gravity to my life and our girls lives and anyone who knows Audrey Faith McGraw.”

Although the two have been married for three decades and have collaborated musically a few times, McGraw shared in November 2023 that some of their biggest disagreements are about their music.

“I mean we’re two different artists. We don’t always agree, musically. In fact, some of our biggest disagreements come when we’re putting a tour together,” McGraw admitted during Time Magazine’s “Person of the Week” podcast.

“Faith’s very type-A,” he added. “I’m a mess. I’ll throw clothes everywhere. I mean she’s always, constantly on me about picking my clothes up. I mean, I spent 30 years living in a hotel… In and out. So I’m just constantly throwing stuff everywhere and she’s like, ‘You got to clean up after yourself.’”
