A mother had a unique labor and delivery experience on Aug. 29, giving birth to her baby boy in the parking lot of a KFC restaurant in Bromsgrove, a town in Worcestershire, England.

Katie Murphy, 33, and her partner Stephen Kirby, 32, welcomed their son Cody into the world under untraditional circumstances, prompting them to give him a nickname inspired by KFC’s famous founder, Colonel Sanders, news agency SWNS reported.

The couple, who also has a four-year-old daughter, had gone to the hospital that morning thinking Katie was going into labor, but they went home around 4 p.m. after being told it was still too early to deliver the baby.

However, Katie’s contractions persisted for hours, and at about 9 p.m., the couple decided to return to the hospital.

About halfway through the roughly 30-minute drive, “Katie said she could feel something and knew the baby was coming,” Stephen recalled.

While on the phone with emergency services, Stephen spotted a KFC restaurant that he and Katie go to often, and he pulled into the parking lot.

Before the ambulance arrived, baby Cody made his entrance into the world. Stephen ran around to the front seat where Katie was sitting and opened the door just in time to catch the couple’s newborn son, who emerged at 9:35 p.m., SWNS said.

“It all happened so fast. Thankfully, the ambulance was with us about five minutes later and took us to hospital,” Katie said. She also noted that Cody is perfectly healthy and happy, “despite his abrupt entrance into the world in his dad’s car.”

Cody’s memorable arrival earned him a KFC-inspired nickname: Colonel Cody.

“It was decided that we have to take him to KFC for his first birthday and get him his first weekend job there,” Katie said.

A KFC spokesperson commented: “We’re honored to have been the place of Cody’s birth and are sending bucket loads of love to the whole family, along with some KFC merch and vouchers to help them celebrate.”
