Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s friendship has put both of them in some wild situations.

While promoting their new show, “Brothers,” the two actors, and close friends, have shared many anecdotes from their years-long friendship, which have sent the internet buzzing.

Whether it be finding out they might be brothers to Harrelson surprising McConaughey in bed in the middle of the night, these two Hollywood icons have made it clear they have an interesting friendship.

Here are some of the most outrageous stories the two shared during recent interviews.

During an appearance on the “Glass Half Full” podcast, McConaughey described some of the oddities that come with being Harrelson’s friend, saying “he’s never gone through a front door in his life.”

He explained that no matter how long it has been since they last saw each other, Harrelson has “never called or sent a message” to make plans, adding, “he just shows up.”

“We hadn’t seen each other for a year at the time when I was living out in LA. I hadn’t seen him for a year. Guess my introduction to him,” he said. “My wife goes ‘ah.’ And I go, ‘Woah.’ Two in the morning, wake up, Woody’s in between us in bed! He had jumped the fence, picked the window, snuck in, and got in bed with us.”

When host Craig Melvin told Harrelson that “people have been shot for less,” the actor replied, “Well, I was hoping he didn’t have a gun.”

“But what a good way to wake up a friend, you know what I mean, and get to be next to Camila [Alves, McConaughey’s wife],” Harrelson added. “Like, that was nice. She was warm to me.”

Anniversary confusion

When speaking to Melvin, the celebrity duo also shared how they first met, although they admit they have different recollections.

McConaughey admits Harrelson “believes we’ve known each other one year longer” than he does, because “I don’t remember the first time we met.”

He blames it on the idea that they began taking shots together at 1 pm, but when Harrelson corrected him on a detail in the story, McConaughey told him, “I don’t remember. You tell me.”

“I already knew of him and I liked him from a distance,” Harrelson said. “And then I met him, and I’m like, ‘Hey, let’s do a shot,’ and he’s like, ‘Man, I got a lot of work to do today.’ I said, ‘One shot’s gonna stop you from all the work you got?'”

McConaughey then chimed in adding, “Hence, I don’t remember meeting that day. It doesn’t sound like that was the beginning and the end of the story.”

Living on the edge

While telling Melvin about Harrelson’s many talents, McConaughey casually mentioned that the actor once “did a handstand 18 inches away from the edge of the Grand Canyon.”

“The stuff this guy pulls off because he didn’t know better is still amazing,” McConaughey said. “Most people do that stuff when they’re a kid, and they lose it as they get older, because you know better. This kid, what are you, 60 what now… 65 and he’s still doing handstands on the edge of the Grand Canyon.”

While Harrelson tried to downplay the achievement by saying he was further away than McConaughey is saying and that it wasn’t the Grand Canyon, the “Dallas Buyers Club” star continued to praise him.

“I’m probably exaggerating less than from the edge on his hand, the Grand Canyon,” McConaughey said. “The photographer freaks out. Never got a picture of it.”

He added that had the photographer been able to take a photo, “it would have been the most epic shot.”

Vacation antics

While promoting the new show, the two actors also sat down with Conan O’Brien on his podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend.”

During the interview, McConaughey shared an unbelievable story about the time Harrelson met a couple on their honeymoon while waiting for his luggage at baggage claim in Greece, and invited them to stay with him and McConaughey in the house McConaughey had rented for them and their families.

“You have a consistent habit of having an open heart and inviting people into your future life or yours or mine,” McConaughey told Harrelson during the interview. “He’s doing this routinely. He’s, he’s very consistent. We go on a Greek holiday and my family… we rent the place… We rent the place and they… we fly over, but they get there before us and we show up and there’s two people sitting on the tailgate of a truck right in front of our rental.”

He went on to say that at first he thought it was Harrelson and his wife Laura, but soon found out it was two strangers who told him, “We met Woody and Laura at the airport getting our luggage and … they’re great.”

When he confronted Harrelson, who had already claimed the primary bedroom in the rental, he told him, “They’re great, man. They’re going to be with us for a week.”

Break-in

When speaking with People, McConaughey expanded on the idea that Harrelson will show up at his home “unannounced,” calling it “one of Woody’s great traits.”

“He never comes through a front door. And he’ll swing by for an hour to say, ‘Howdy!’” McConaughey said. “It might turn into, ‘I’ve moved in for three months.’ It’s a beautiful trait how he makes himself at home.”

Harrelson confirmed he does make a habit of making McConaughey’s house his own, noting, McConaughey “tolerates it.”

McConaughey went on to explain that often during these months-long stays, he will approach Harrelson after a while asking him to leave, and his kids will fight back.

“There are times when I’m like, ‘Man, Woody, I need some space,’ and my whole family’s like, ‘No, don’t let Woody go. We’ve been staying up later having more milkshakes,’ whatever,” McConaughey said. “The laughter’s been in the house a while.”

Brothers?

In their new show, McConaughey and Harrelson play fictionalized versions of themselves who find out they could potentially be brothers.

The premise for the show seems outrageous. However, it is closer to the truth than it may seem, as the two actors found out during a trip to Greece with their families that there is a possibility the two may actually be brothers.

“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families and et cetera and my mom is there. And she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad,’” McConaughey told Ripa on her podcast in 2023.

McConaughey explained to Ripa that his mother and father were divorced before he was born, so there is a possibility that she and Harrelson’s father met during that time period.

Harrelson also told the story while on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in 2023 that McConaughey’s mom’s story was “filled with innuendo,” implying she and his father may have had a romance when they knew each other.

“The year of his birth, nine months before, she was on a sabbatical from her relationship with his supposed father, Jim,” Harrelson joked about McConaughey’s birthday.

The “Hunger Games” actor shared that while he is willing to get a DNA test to find out once and for all, McConaughey is less willing, with Harrelson telling Colbert, “he feels like he is losing a father.”
