Lane Kiffin claims ref told him 'he would have been killed' if he blew whistle before Kentucky touchdown

During Kentucky’s 35-34 win over LSU in Lexington on Saturday, there were a number of consequential plays. That’s typically how things work in a one-point game decided in overtime, but it’s safe to say one play in the first half will be sticking with LSU head coach Lane Kiffin for quite some time.

With three seconds remaining in the second quarter and the ball on the LSU one-yard line, Kentucky was faced with a decision to make: kick the field goal and tie the game at 17, or grab hold of the momentum with a touchdown.

Kentucky head coach Will Stein opted for the latter option, and Wildcats quarterback Kenny Minchey punched it into the end zone at the end of the half, but it wasn’t without controversy.

The LSU defense appeared to stop Minchey at the goal line as the rugby-like scrum came to a stop, but a second effort by the Kentucky offensive line eventually pushed the quarterback across the goal line.

It was one of those instances in which the officials could have blown the play dead before the runner was down, but instead, there was no whistle, and the Wildcats were awarded a touchdown.

During a Sunday press conference, Kiffin was asked about the specific play at the end of the opening half, and claimed that the line judge told him “he would have been killed” if he blew the play dead.

“The line judge just said that, in that situation, there was too much at stake,” Kiffin explained. “He said he would have been killed if he had blown the whistle for the play being stopped, even though it appeared to be stopped.

“My complaint is that you can’t refuse to blow the whistle because it’s such a big play. If you would have blown that whistle on first down, or with 10 minutes left in the game, for forward progress being stopped, then blow it for protection and for the way the ruling is supposed to work. Don’t not blow it because it’s such a big play. The rules are the rules.”

Officials opting to keep their whistles in their pockets before halftime wasn’t the only controversial moment of Saturday’s thriller at Kentucky.

After LSU scored with ease to begin overtime, Kentucky answered back with a score of its own before opting to go for two and win the game.

During the Wildcats’ first attempt on the two-point conversion, a Kentucky player appeared to flinch, and while a flag was thrown, it was negated by a timeout called by the Wildcats.

Seconds later, Minchey walked into the end zone to give Kentucky its second overtime win in back-to-back weeks.
