A week after collapsing against Alabama, Kentucky responded in its next Southeastern Conference game. Wildcats quarterback Kenny Minchey threw two touchdown passes as Kentucky stunned No. 9 Texas A&M 31-21 Saturday at Kyle Field in College Station.

A third-quarter surge under first-year coach Will Stein powered the Wildcats to the upset, giving Stein his first road win in conference play and Kentucky its first victory over a ranked opponent in nearly two years. The Wildcats last defeated a ranked opponent on Sept. 28, 2024, when they beat then-No. 6 Ole Miss 20-17.

Texas A&M’s offense faced a familiar challenge Saturday against a Kentucky defense led by former Aggies assistant coach Jay Bateman. Kentucky’s defensive coordinator spent the past two seasons on Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko’s staff.

Bateman’s familiarity appeared to pay off as Kentucky kept Texas A&M off balance throughout the game, limiting quarterback Marcel Reed to 236 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

“This is what I expect us to do,” Stein said. “That’s how I expect us to play. That is the physicality, that’s the toughness, that’s the competitiveness, that’s the grit that I expect us to play with every single Saturday.”

Minchey, a transfer from Notre Dame, found Kenny Darby wide open for a 42-yard touchdown on the first drive of the second half to break a 7-all tie.

Kentucky running back CJ Baxter then put together rushing touchdowns on the Wildcats’ next two drives to extend the lead to 28-7. The Wildcats made it 31-14 on a 52-yard field goal with less than nine minutes remaining.

Texas A&M was driving after that, but Kentucky defensive back Jordan Castell intercepted Reed.

“I did not do a good enough job of coaching this team and preparing this team,” Elko said. “I don’t take any positives from this game. I don’t want to take away anything from Kentucky. … Kentucky came in here and whopped us.”

The Aggies cut the lead to 31-21 when Reed connected with Micah Riley for a 5-yard score with less than four minutes to go. Minchey finished the day with 252 passing yards and Baxter had 19 carries for 87 yards.
