Jason Kelce calls the Commanders the 'Redskins' during game, immediately apologizes so as to not get canceled

Jason Kelce acted as if he committed an unpardonable broadcasting sin Sunday afternoon while serving as a booth analyst for NFL Network during the Washington Commanders game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Kelce’s sin?

He called the team in burgundy and gold the Washington Redskins.

Gasp!

This is actually nothing if you’re a normal person who is aware the Commanders were the Redskins for decades until that name got canceled by an outcry to mostly liberal voices claiming “Redskins” is a racist insult.

(Native Americans have both agreed and vehemently disagreed the term is racist – it mostly depends on what group with an agenda one asks).

Anyway, back to Kelce. Look, he’s still trying to settle into his broadcasting role three years after retiring from the Philadelphia Eagles.

He was a 13-year NFL center of the highest caliber, so he’s outstanding at explaining offensive line play.

This booth analyst gig is mostly new for Kelce and he got all fired up explaining the Commanders’ play in the secondary.

“Washington’s secondary has been great on third down,” Kelce said under replays of plays by the unit. “…When you’re in man to man coverage, it just takes one missed tackle, and that can turn into a huge play.

“The Redskins right now are doing a great job of not only staying tight, but making the play when the ball is in the receiver’s hand and keeping it short of the sticks.”

Play-by-play announcer Dave Pasch immediately chimed in, “Commanders. You did it.”

Oh noes, Kelce is in trouble.

Or at least he acted like it.

“What’d I do?” Kelce asked.

“You said Redskins,” Pasch said, repeating that nickname that is both beloved and blackballed.

“Oh, my gosh!” Kelce exclaimed. “I almost made it out.”

The three men in the booth that included Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner as another analyst, apparently talked about the possibility of inadvertently using the Redskins name on air before the game.

“Yeah, the three of us had a little gentleman’s bet who would be first,” Pasch said.

And all this shows the utter stupidity of the whole name change thing.

If one were to take a poll of whether the Redskins should continue to be called the Redskins, as they were in Washington since 1937 to 2020, it is likely a large portion of respondents would definitely want the traditional nickname to return.

And, yes, there are people who would still want the old nickname banished to the memory of what they believe was a racist time. Washington owner Josh Harris is apparently in this group, and he gets the final call.

But one simply cannot erase history – although some people try.

The Redskins were beloved in Washington. Kelce played against them during nine of his 13 seasons with that team.

Many players who wore the Indian head helmet logo inspired by Blackfeet Chief John Two Guns White Calf and heard the, “Hail to the Redskins,” fight song echo in their ears during home games, continue to hold allegiance to the Redskins nickname.

The NFL Network booth, led by Pasch’s lighthearted approach to this flub, struck the right tone.

Kelce’s apology? Relax, bro.

Liberals may not like it. But Diron Talbert, Dave Butz, Darryl Grant and Jonathan Allen aren’t coming after you.
