Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg is a superstar, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, and his sports card market has been booming. Ever since he burst on the scene at Duke, following being the No. 1 overall high school prospect and a McDonald’s All-American, sports fans and media knew he was going to be special.
I, for one, did not believe he was so special that his most sought-after rookie card, the Topps Chrome Update Rookie Debut Patch Auto 1-of-1 in a PSA Gem-Mint 10 grade for both the card and the auto, would become the sixth-most expensive trading card of all time.

The card sold in Fanatics Collect’s September Premier Auction for $8.04 million, amassing 83 bids. The auction ran from September 10 through September 24. A bidding war took place into the early hours of Friday morning, with the card going from $3.5 million to $8.04 million from 9 p.m. ET on Thursday to 2 a.m. ET on Friday. That sale was historic because it became the highest recorded sale for a basketball card featuring a single player.
According to a Fanatics spokesperson, “This is the first class of NBA Debut Patch cards, which saw each rookie wear a patch on their jersey sleeve during their first game which was removed following the game and put into a trading card and signed.” The Debut Patch was first introduced in 2021 in Major League Baseball, garnering massive sales like the 2024 Paul Skenes Debut Patch Auto selling for $1.11 Million. It’s easily been the most innovative concept the hobby has seen since the logo man, which is a patch of the respective league’s logo from a game-worn jersey. It’s among the rarest collectibles in the sports card market.
Flagg’s card became the 3rd-highest NBA card sale ever, trailing only a pair of dual logoman cards, the 2006–07 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs 1-of-1 Michael Jordan and LeBron James, which sold in a private sale for $10 Million and the 2007–08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs 1-of-1 Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, which sold in August of 2025 for $12,932,000.

AN ULTRA-RARE COOPER FLAGG TRADING CARD HAS BEEN FOUND, AND THE MAVERICKS ARE PREPARED TO GIVE A LOT FOR IT
It also ranks as the fifth-highest sports card sale, according to Card Ladder. A Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card sold for $12.6 million at a Heritage auction in 2022, and an ungraded Shohei Ohtani 2026 Topps Chrome Gold Logoman patch autograph card, famously fetched $11 million on July 30 in a private sale to Kevin O’Leary and the investment group Secure Collectibles.
In a statement by Fanatics, the company said, “The Cooper Flagg card was famously pulled in a break done by Rhody Breakers in Rhode Island, and belonged to collector Jason Williams of South Carolina.”

Jason Williams, 50, acquired the card after spending only $515 to land a spot on Rhody Breakers. For those who don’t know, buying a spot in a “break” is where a customer purchases a team and/or player (spot) for an amount set by the specific breaker on a livestream, where the retailer opens a box(es) of sports cards, with the customer hoping to pull a life-changing card, an auto, or numbered card. It’s a gamble. There was no guarantee Williams would even get a card(s) totaling that $515 spot purchase.

Speaking of gambles, this is the biggest gamble I have ever seen in the hobby (as the sports card collecting market is affectionately known). Is Cooper Flagg a generational talent? In some ways, yes, but the jury is still out and only time will tell if he is truly one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He’s a No. 1 overall pick, fresh off a solid rookie season, but in my opinion, he’s going to need to win an MVP and a championship soon if this buyer wants to see a solid return on the investment.
Many of the biggest names in the NBA, who have a proven track record, have cards I would find much more enticing to purchase. I believe Steph Curry is undervalued, LeBron James is a certified NBA legend, who owns many NBA records, with cards I’d happily purchase over this.
If I had $8 Million, here’s what I would buy instead:

- 2003-04 Exquisite LeBron James RPA /23
- 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 9
- 2009-10 National Treasures Stephen Curry Logoman Auto 1/1
- 1998 Pikachu Illustrator PSA 9
- 1999 1st Edition Charizard PSA 10
- 1997 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Ultimate Logos Auto 1/1
- A few 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie cards PSA 10
I could put a long list together, but I would much rather spend money on a tried and true sports legend, or a vintage Pokemon card, rather than gamble with losing millions on a potential NBA legend. But hey, I’m not the one with $8 million to blow, so to the buyer, this could just be pocket change.

Either way, this sale is a great thing for Flagg’s card market, shows that sports cards are becoming more enticing than stocks in many ways, and the additional sales of debut patch autos, including San Antonio Spurs star Dylan Harper’s card selling for $2.88 million and Hornets’ sharpshooter Kon Knueppel’s Debut Patch card selling for $2.34 million, are incredibly impressive as well.
