Caitlin Clark's regular-season game tops WNBA Finals Game 7 despite record viewership celebration

USA Sports says an average of 3.3 million viewers watched the Golden State Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream in the first Game 7 in WNBA history. That’s the largest reported postseason audience the league has ever had, but it still didn’t top Caitlin Clark in the regular season.

An August matchup between Clark’s Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky drew 3.31 million average viewers across NBC and Peacock. USA Sports’ own release ranks Game 7 second among WNBA games since the league’s opening weekend in 1997, behind that Fever-Sky game.

WHY ISN’T ANGEL REESE HELD TO CAITLIN CLARK’S STANDARD WHEN FANS ATTACK HER TEAMMATES?

The totals are close, and the Fever game had NBC’s broader broadcast reach compared with Game 7’s cable coverage. Both include streaming, but USA Sports still hasn’t provided a television and streaming breakdown. We don’t know how much of Game 7’s audience came from USA Network and CNBC and how much came from streaming led by Peacock.

Game 7 was the first Finals game this year to crack the top 10 in viewership among regular-season and playoff games. Before that, Game 1 had ranked 11th, behind 10 games featuring the Indiana Fever.

USA Sports released its numbers Tuesday evening, and the WNBA followed Wednesday. Both cite Nielsen Big Data + Panel and digital data from Adobe Analytics. By then, some of the coverage had already awarded the league records its own announcement doesn’t claim.

The WNBA’s release contradicts the early record claim

Front Office Sports “reporter” Colin Salao, whose WNBA coverage often reads like league PR, published a preliminary Game 7 audience Tuesday afternoon, citing an unnamed source. His initial story declared the seven-game series the most-watched WNBA Finals ever, with an average of approximately 1.89 million viewers.

The WNBA’s announcement says the series averaged 1.88 million and was the most-watched since 1999. It reports a 30% increase over 2025, but no all-time series record.

Salao’s initial report also said that if the preliminary Game 7 number held, it would be the most-watched regular-season or postseason WNBA game since 1997. That claim overlooked the Fever-Sky game, which USA Sports’ official ranking leaves ahead of Game 7.

So the rounded audience number held. The historical claims didn’t.

The story’s updated opening now ranks Game 7 second since 1997’s opening weekend. But as of Wednesday, the body still calls the series the most-watched Finals ever and retains the earlier claim that Game 7 would rank first since 1997.

OutKick has previously examined Salao’s handling of anonymous WNBA claims and his coverage of OutKick. Spoiler alert: his coverage of the WNBA is very favorable and his coverage of OutKick … isn’t.

Here, whoever supplied the preliminary figure got a favorable headline into circulation hours before the release, while readers got a series record the league itself isn’t claiming.

As I argued in my column about access journalism, accurate information can still function as PR. Getting a number before everyone else doesn’t excuse getting its place in history wrong.

How much of the cable record came from cable?

The WNBA’s release includes a footnote identifying its figures as “Total Audience Delivery,” combining Nielsen Big Data + Panel with Adobe Analytics. It also calls Game 7 the most-watched WNBA game ever “on cable.”

Neither announcement provides a separate total for USA Network and CNBC or a separate streaming audience. Neither explains what independent verification applies to the Adobe figures or how the streaming calculation was matched to Nielsen’s television measurement.

Those are the same omissions I pointed out before Game 7. Nielsen’s measurement has changed, and the releases add audiences measured by a different company before comparing the totals with older broadcasts.

EVERY WNBA NETWORK’S BIGGEST REGULAR-SEASON AUDIENCE IN 2026 FEATURED CAITLIN CLARK’S FEVER

However, USA Sports found space to tell us that its nearly hour-long postgame coverage averaged more than a million viewers. It supplied demographic information, season-long consumption figures and the number of broadcasts that crossed a million.

It even said CNBC simulcasts brought more than a million “new viewers” to the WNBA this season. But the release fails to explain how it determined those people were new to the league.

The playoff record comes with a qualifier

USA Sports also promoted the “highest average playoff viewership in WNBA history,” with a minimum of four games required for the comparison. That refers to its own eight-game package, which averaged 1.6 million viewers.

The WNBA’s release puts the entire postseason average at 1.49 million, its highest since 1997. USA Sports is promoting a record for its own playoff coverage. The league isn’t claiming an all-time record for the full postseason.

The new league release does provide additional information about Game 6. USA Sports’ original announcement for the Thursday matinée cited Nielsen’s panel-only data alongside Adobe. The WNBA now attributes its listed audiences to Big Data + Panel and Adobe, although it doesn’t explain whether Game 6’s underlying figure changed.

There’s also an apparent mistake in the league’s platform listings. It assigns USA Network, E!, SYFY and Peacock to Game 5, while USA Sports identifies those as Game 6’s platforms. The league lists USA, CNBC and Peacock for Game 6, the combination previously announced for Game 5.

That looks like a mix-up. It should still be corrected, particularly when the releases are ranking audiences by platform.

It’s no surprise that the WNBA’s first Game 7 drew a substantial audience. But the networks and the league still need to explain how the streaming audience was verified.

And to any aspiring reporters out there, remember to check the claims of your “sources.” Often, they are using you to get their narrative out to the public.

If you don’t, you’re not a reporter. You’re a water-carrying shill.
