Florida State could no longer keep kicking the Mike Norvell can down the road following Saturday night’s loss to Clemson in front of thousands of empty seats.
The time for change had officially arrived, with apathy boiling over within the Seminoles fanbase, which led to President Richard McCullough meeting with athletic department administrators and donors over the past twelve hours to make a final decision on the future of Mike Norvell.

On Sunday afternoon, the final decision was made to fire the Florida State head coach. This came just days after school president Richard McCullough penned an open letter to supporters pleading with them to show up for the student-athletes over the remainder of the 2026 season.
After dropping to 3-5 this season, with only one ACC win so far, the sense of urgency hit its tipping point after the performance against Clemson that also saw fans decide to stay away from Doak S. Campbell Stadium in the process.
Three years ago, Florida State was in the mix for a College Football Playoff spot before Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury that also led to the Seminoles being left out of the postseason after a 12-0 regular season.

But, Mike Norvell would never find that type of success again in Tallahassee, going 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 last season that led to fans calling for his ouster in the process.
Unfortunately for Florida State fans who were sick of losing, Norvell had secured a contract extension that included a buyout that will pay him $50.3 million to hit the unemployment line.
“We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program,” President Richard McCullough said. “We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best. We understand the deep passion of Seminole fans and share their high expectations for this program.”
Rick Stockstill was announced as the interim head coach after the departure of Norvell.

Adding to the ongoing problems at FSU, the school announced in September that athletic director Michael Alford was being fired, creating a conundrum for school officials who were hoping Norvell would win enough games this season to gain enough support from fans to return in 2027.
Seminole boosters had seen enough on Saturday night, and if it weren’t for FSU taking Miami to overtime two weeks ago, the move might have already been made.

To make matters worse for those within the FSU administration, social media had a field day this weekend over a plane flying a banner that called for the school to fire Norvell, even if it incorrectly spelled the head coach’s name.
Right now, we are living in an era of college sports where, if you get too far behind, you’ll be lucky to recover, given the ever-changing world of NIL and the transfer portal.

For Florida State, it was time to move on and make the change in leadership that had been brewing for well over a year.
The 36-24 loss to Clemson on Saturday night was the final straw for those who financially support the football program.
FROM POWER FAILURES TO MORAL VICTORIES, MONDAY NIGHT COULDN’T HAVE GONE MUCH WORSE FOR FLORIDA STATE FANS
One has to also remember that if FSU had decided to bring Mike Norvell back for another season, they would essentially be a walking target for opposing teams in the ACC.
You can’t sell the future when school officials are essentially operating its football program on a year-to-year basis, considering the amount of money needed to field a roster.
Also, Mike Norvell was obviously waiting around to see when the school would finally make a decision, as he hosted a number of recruits on Sunday.

It was time for Florida State to admit this wasn’t going to work and move on
There was no way the athletic department could continue to allow the FSU coach to operate without the support of financial backers needed to ensure they would be able to compete on a financial level worthy enough of top-5 status within its own conference.
So, with a majority of FSU boosters offering up their financial support if a move were to be made, school officials received a much-needed commitment to help raise the funds needed to fire the current head coach and attack the transfer portal with their backing, the decision was made to part ways with Norvell.

At the end of the day, this is still Florida State. While the name might not carry the weight that it used to, this is clearly still a national brand that can be successful in this era of college athletics.

Florida State finally just decided it would pay the buyout, while knowing it could end up costing an additional $50 million to bring in a new coach and staff.
Now, there is another opening in college football, and this one should garner a lot of attention from coaches across the country.
