The college football season just began in the best way for Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes.

For the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, it was heartbreak on the final play of Thursday night’s game in Atlanta.

Colorado pulled off a 14-13 victory on the road after Boo Carter blocked a game-winning field goal attempt by Georgia Tech from 45 yards out, stunning a sold-out crowd at Bobby Dodd Stadium and starting a wild celebration on the field for the Buffaloes.

Carter’s heroics would’ve been nothing, though, if it wasn’t for Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis finding tight end Charlie Williams for a 20-yard touchdown with 37 seconds to go in the game.

The touchdown snapped quite the drought of offense for Sanders’ squad, as the Buffaloes were able to find the end zone in the second quarter but couldn’t muster anything else until that game-winning touchdown late in the fourth.

But the Buffaloes’ defense kept them going in the game. They also blanked Georgia Tech in the third quarter and kept it a 10-7 game until Yellow Jackets kicker Aidan Birr hit a field goal to further the lead.

What should be encouraging moving forward for the Buffaloes is how dominant they were in the run game under new offensive coordinator Breanna Marion. Colorado outrushed Georgia Tech, 183-51, but they were unable to convert that positive rush attack into points.

On the other hand, Sanders and the Buffaloes will need to work on special teams despite Carter’s brilliant rush off the edge during that field goal block.

The Yellow Jackets’ only touchdown on the night was a 100-yard kickoff returned for the score by Rahkeem Smith in the second quarter. And despite the connection between Lewis and Williams with just seconds remaining, Colorado had a go-ahead field goal attempt that was blocked in the fourth quarter.

Of course, it’s just the first game of the season for Colorado, but this is a team looking to turn the tide after going 3-9 last season in Sanders’ third year as head coach.
