A college football field looked so pathetic last weekend, the AD was forced to issue an apology

First downs should be a little easier to come by this weekend for the Winston-Salem State football team, and it has nothing to do with a better offensive game plan.

Nope. Put simply, they’ll actually know where they need to go now.

A TikTok showing the … odd … way a stadium worker marked the hash lines at Bowman Gray Stadium ahead of last weekend’s game went viral earlier this week, sparking such backlash, the AD was forced to issue an apology.

Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., has hosted NASCAR-sanctioned stock car racing events since 1949, including Cup races from 1958 through 1971. The quarter-mile track surrounds the field used by the Winston-Salem State University Rams football team. Wake Forest University also played games at the stadium before their new facility was built. The video has more than 2 million views in just one day, and shows an unidentified person jaggedly painting the hash marks along the sidelines at Bowman Gray Stadium. The man then steps back, admires his work, and then proceeds to walk off the next mark by taking a few giants steps and laying down some more paint.

Fans and team personnel already in the stadium were, understandably, stunned. And a little concerned.

Take a look:

Winston-Salem AD apologizes

Amazing. I could watch that video all day long. There’s just so much meat on the bone there, I don’t even know where to begin.

Just look at those marks, and then think about the fact that they then played an actual college football game in between those lines a few hours later. A real college football game!

It looks like a pee-wee field. Baffling.

I’ll admit, when I first saw that video hit the timeline this week, I thought it was AI. In today’s world, with all the resources we have, there was simply no way that was a real video. I didn’t fall for it …

Until I saw Winston-Salem’s AD, Eric Burns, issue an apology via social media late Tuesday.

“The field markings at our last home game fell short of WSSU athletics’ standards, and I take responsibility,” Burns said. “We’ve secured additional field preparation support and implemented new checks to ensure this is addressed before our next home game. Our student-athletes and Ram Nation deserve the highest standard, and we are committed to meeting it every time.”

Well, that’s a relief. Perhaps now the 0-6 Rams will have a chance to actually win a game moving forward. Surely it can’t get any worse!

It starts at the top, folks. Remember that. What did Deion Sanders once say?

If the Rams’ athletic department is allowing that sort of nonsense before the game, I can’t even imagine how low the standards are when the lights actually do come on.

Let’s be better this week, Winston-Salem State. Let’s show a little pride.

And most importantly, let’s go out and win a ballgame.
