Yankees acquire Enyel De Los Santos from Padres, add 2nd bullpen piece: report

PHILADELPHIA – The Yankees didn’t stop adding to their bullpen with the addition of Mark Leiter Jr. on Tuesday.

Instead, the team swung a deal for Padres righty Enyel De Los Santos just before the 6 p.m. trade deadline. The YES Network’s Jack Curry reported the deal.

De Los Santos, 28, has a 4.46 ERA, 32.5 Whiff% and 28.2 K% in 44 games this year. Armed with a fastball, slider and changeup, he’s also allowed 11 home runs over 40.1 innings.

Last year, San Diego used the reliever in 70 games while he recorded a 3.29 ERA. That’s a lot of work over 1.5 seasons, but the Yankees were looking to add strikeout stuff to their bullpen.

The team’s relievers had a 23 K% entering Tuesday. That ranked 17th in the majors. In general, the Yankees have had a tough time late in games, as their bullpen has a 4.35 ERA since June.

The hope is that the additions of De Los Santos and Leiter, acquired from the Cubs, can improve those numbers.

Now in his sixth season, De Los Santos has a 4.25 ERA over 209 career games with the Padres, Guardians, Pirates and Phillies. Like Leiter, he won’t be a free agent until 2027.
