BALTIMORE — As a benches-clearing skirmish broke out between the Yankees and Orioles on Friday night, Jose Trevino hobbled onto the field at Camden Yards.
Despite injuring his quad on a base-running play in the top of the ninth, the Yankees’ catcher joined the fray in the bottom of the inning after Clay Holmes hit Baltimore’s Heston Kjerstad in the head with a sinker on a rainy night. The hit-by-pitch led to Orioles manager Brandon Hyde erupting at the Yankees’ dugout.
Austin Wells, who replaced Trevino behind the plate, had to intercept the skipper before a fiery scrum led to lots of yelling and shoving.

After the chaos died down and the Yankees won, 4-1, Aaron Boone revealed that Trevino injured his quad. He didn’t specify which one at the time, but Trevino hurt himself scoring from second on a Juan Soto single.
After popping up from a slide into home plate, Trevino winced.
“We’ll kind of re-evaluate and see where we’re at tomorrow,” Boone said after Trevino went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
It didn’t take the Yankees long to evaluate, as Trevino went on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain on Saturday morning.

With Trevino out before the All-Star break, Wells will presumably get the bulk of the team’s catching reps, something he’s shared all season.
The Yankees promoted Carlos Narváez in a corresponding move for Trevino. He has yet to make his major league debut, but the Yankees called him up earlier this season.
Narváez is considered a strong defender. The 25-year-old hit .269 with nine home runs, 47 RBI and an .829 OPS in 71 games at Triple-A.
There’s also Ben Rice.
He’s been playing first base since debuting with the Yankees a few weeks ago, but he’s a catcher by trade. Members of the organization, including catching director Tanner Swanson, have said that the Yankees are high on Rice’s receiving.
