Wowed by Bryan Woo, Yankees can’t complete comeback in second straight loss to Mariners

After ending the Yankees’ winning streak on Monday night, the Mariners won their second straight game in the Bronx on Tuesday.

Seattle starter Bryan Woo led the way in the 6-3 Seattle victory, holding the Yankees scoreless for six innings. The right-hander also restricted the Yankees to two hits while striking out seven and walking none over 77 pitches.

Woo missed the beginning of the season with elbow inflammation, but he’s permitted just one run in three starts since making his 2024 debut on May 10.

Woo stifled the Yankees, but he had some help from Dominic Canzone. The right fielder, who homered and hit a sac fly in Seattle’s comeback victory on Monday, made two diving plays early in the game. The first robbed Anthony Volpe in the opening inning, while the second stole an extra-base hit from Oswaldo Cabrera in the third frame.

While Woo was excellent, the Mariners’ bullpen almost blew the game in the seventh inning. Down 4-0, Aaron Judge worked a walk before Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch.

That set Gleyber Torres up for a three-run blast, just his third homer of the year. The dinger, served by Trent Thornton, electrified Yankee Stadium. But the Bombers couldn’t complete the comeback after Luke Raley got a run back for Seattle with a solo homer off of Clayton Andrews’ very first pitch in the eighth.

No. 9 hitter Dylan Moore then hit his second homer of the night, also of the solo variety, off of Nick Burdi in the ninth inning.

Earlier in the game, Clarke Schmidt couldn’t quite replicate his last two performances, when he logged two of the longest starts of his career against the Rays and Twins.

Schmidt blanked those teams, but Seattle was able to score against the right-hander when Moore pulled an outside cutter over the left field wall. The third-inning homer plated Josh Rojas, who got on with a double.

Despite allowing a longball for the first time since May 4, Schmidt put together another strong start. He held Seattle to those two runs while tallying five innings, four hits, two walks, six strikeouts and 100 pitches.

Schmidt has now thrown at least 100 pitches in two straight games, a career-first. He has a 2.59 ERA after 10 starts.

The M’s scored two more runs in the seventh inning with Dennis Santana on the mound. First, Ty France hit a solo homer. Moore then added an RBI single.

With two losses in the books, the Yankees will throw Nestor Cortes on Wednesday. The left-hander has a 3.56 ERA through 10 starts, and he’s been even better at home.

Cortes has a 1.27 ERA at Yankee Stadium this season, a drastic departure from his 6.75 mark on the road.

Meanwhile, the Mariners will go with another talented young starter, Bryce Miller. The righty has a 3.08 ERA nine starts into his sophomore season.
