Worker making repairs to NYC bridge fatally struck by SUV driver

A 41-year-old worker making repairs to a bridge between the Bronx and Washington Heights was killed when an SUV driver slammed into him, police said Monday.

Herb Henry Alesna was struck as he stood outside his utility truck on the Washington Bridge about 10:20 p.m. Friday, cops said. His truck had a large flashing arrow directing traffic around it.

A 35-year-old man driving a Dodge Durango into Manhattan changed lanes and collided with a Toyota Highlander heading in the same direction then slammed into the utility truck and Alesna, cops said.

Alesna, who lived in Maspeth, Queens, according to cops, died at the scenes. He was a contractor repairing joints on the bridge when he was killed.

“This was a horrible tragedy and our thoughts are with the loved ones of Mr. Alesna,” a spokesman for the city Department of Transportation said. “NYC DOT is working with NYPD as the crash investigation continues.”

Neither the Durango driver nor the Highlander driver, a 36-year-old man, were hurt.

There was no arrest or summonses issued but police are still investigating the crash.
