Worker killed in accident on tarmac at Charlotte airport

A Charlotte airport worker was killed Monday morning after getting hit by a vehicle on the tarmac.

Officials at Charlotte Douglas International Airport said an American Airlines employee was hit by an airline ramp vehicle in the paved area near the gate where planes park around 9:30 a.m.

The name of the victim was not released.

“We are devastated by the accident involving a team member,” American Airlines said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time.”

A passenger whose flight was delayed told WCNC a number of emergency vehicles responded to the scene near the B concourse.

There were “no significant impacts to operations,” the airport said in a statement.

The N.C. Department of Labor told Queen City News it would conduct an inspection at the scene.
