Woman mauled by wolves after jogging into restricted area at French zoo

A 37-year-old woman was attacked by three wolves at a zoo outside Paris when she jogged into a restricted area, according to reports.

The incident happened early Sunday morning at the Thoiry zoo, about 25 miles west of the City of Lights.

The woman suffered bites to her on neck, back and calf, according to Agence France-Presse. She is reportedly fighting for her life. She was rescued by park workers who heard her screams, BBC News reported.

Officials said the woman had been staying at the zoo’s safari-style lodge with her family when she decided to go for a run.

“The behavior of the animals in the reserves is that of animals in freedom or semi-liberty,” Wow Safari Thoiry CEO Christelle Bercheny told AFP.

The lodge offers up-close views of wildlife from the rooms, with animals passing by the windows.

Officials said it wasn’t clear if the woman made a mistake or the trail wasn’t marked properly, leading to her going into the safari area that is restricted to guests and cars.

However, the woman would have gone by a security system, a trench and an electric fence to end up in the section with the wolves, according to The Guardian.
