Woman found dead on baggage conveyer belt at Chicago O’Hare Airport

A woman was found dead Thursday in a restricted baggage area at Chicago O’Hare Airport after getting “entangled” in machinery on a conveyer belt.

Firefighters were called to the airport around 7:45 a.m. for a report of a person “pinned in machinery” in an area of international Terminal 5 that is not open to the public, officials said.

Upon arriving, responders found the woman “entangled in the conveyer belt system used to move baggage,” but it’s still unknown how exactly she became trapped.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. She has not been publicly identified other than being 57 years old. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Labor said she was not an airport employee.

The woman was reportedly seen on surveillance video walking into the restricted area around 2:27 a.m., but it’s unclear how she found her way in or what time she became entangled, reported CBS Chicago. The video does not show what happened after she entered the area.

The Chicago Police Department is currently investigating the baggage area as a crime scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Friday.
