Nassau County police fatally shot a man after a wild car chase from Queens that injured several officers.
Around 11:15 p.m. Friday, the suspect, who authorities had tried to pull over in Jamaica, almost ran over two NYPD officers in his attempt to escape, News12 reported.
The driver sped over to Nassau County, where cops tried to pull him over at Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway. Authorities said that the suspect nearly mowed down the Nassau County officers who tried to block his escape, according to News12.
The chase came to a standstill after the suspect drove the wrong way on to the Sunrise Highway, damaging police and civilian cars before losing control and crashing in Massapequa Park, at Hicksville Road and Sunrise Highway.
The suspect, not immediately identified, refused to exit the car and surrender, Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said at a news conference.
“The officers attempted to get the individual to come out of the car. A shooting occurred, and the individual has died and he is at the local area hospital,” Ryder said.
The police commissioner told reporters Saturday morning that five Nassau County police officers, one civilian, and two NYPD officers, were all being treated for their injuries sustained during the traffic- stop-turned-car-chase.
