WhatsApp users in UK receive major AI upgrade months after ‘hated’ US launch that made people want to quit the app

META has started rolling out its virtual AI assistant to WhatsApp in the UK, after first launching in the US.

However, the virtual assistant hasn’t exactly won a sparkling reception across the pond.

Meta AI now available in Europe and the UK.

Alongside the UK, Meta AI will be launched on WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram in over 60 new countries.

Users may see a blue circle icon floating in the bottom right corner of their WhatsApp home screen – this is Meta AI.

It offers users new AI search and intelligent chat capabilities, similar to the services popularised by ChatGPT, for free.

The chat function, where users can have conversations with the AI bot, will soon be available in six European languages.

Users will also be able to summon the AI inside their group chats on WhatsApp – a feature that will soon be available on Facebook Messenger and Instagram DMs too.

The tech giant hopes people will call on Meta AI throughout the day to answer their burning queries.

But those who have already received the new upgrade say it is “annoying” and are itching to disable it.

“Why the hell do we need an AI in a chat app,” one user wrote on Reddit.

“It is so annoying, even when I search chat it shows stupid recommendation on top.”

Another added: “I want an option to disable the Meta AI from WhatsApp.

“Meta AI is not something I want in my communication app. Meta stop cluttering our experience with options we don’t ask for.

“Or at least give us an option to disable the AI before we decide to move to other messaging apps…”

In a separate post on X, a third user wrote: “My WhatsApp updated again last night and I HATE IT.

“Why is there a Meta AI whatever ON MY WHATSAPP TAKE IT OFF.”

Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, launched Meta AI in the US in 2023.

The company acknowledged that it has taken longer to roll out its AI technology compared to its rivals.

How does it work?

You can use Meta AI in WhatsApp to ask questions, receive helpful recommendations or talk about your interests.

To chat with the AI, simply tap on the blue circle icon.

You may be prompted to read and accept Meta’s terms.

Once accepted, you’ll then be able to select a suggested prompt or type your own.

Then click the send button for the conversation to begin.

To bring Meta AI into a conversation, simply type @MetaAI followed by your prompt or question.

For example: “@MetaAI tell us the best sightseeing spots in Edinburgh.”

Forward a message to Meta AI

Meta AI won’t have access to all of your messages – only the ones you let it.

Users can forward a message from an individual or a group with a prompt for Meta AI.

Simply hover over the message, and click the downwards arrow.

Then tap Forward > search Meta AI.

If prompted, click continue and type your prompt into the message field.
