WASPI latest: Debate in Parliament, WASPI compensation amounts and calculator

WASPI campaigners are pushing for payouts from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) this week as the issue is set to be debated in Parliament again.

There could be big news for women born in certain years as the controversial row over state pension ages is set to be discussed, with thousands of women hoping to hear positive news about thousands of pounds of compensation which could be agreed.

This is what we know right now about WASPI and the DWP row.

What does WASPI stand for?

WASPI stands for Women Against State Pension Inequality. The campaign was formed after the DWP changed the state pension age for women from 60 to 65 and then to 66. The campaign argues that women weren’t given enough notice and couldn’t modify retirement plans and had not been adequately informed about the change to state pension age.

How much WASPI compensation will I get in 2024?

The WASPI campaign is pushing for £1,000 to £2,950 in compensation for each woman and the amount is expected to fall within these figures.

The DWP has not yet made a final decision or confirmed the amounts.

Who is entitled to WASPI compensation?

Women born in these years can get compensation: if you’re born between April 1950 and April 1960, ie currently aged between 60 to 66.

Women born in these years are entitled to compensation because there was “insufficient information regarding changes to State Pension age”, according to a report in March 2024 by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.

When is the WASPI debate in Parliament?

WASPI was due to be debated on Friday, May 17, but there is a concern it could slip into July.

WASPI chair Angela Madden said: “We’re really not sure it will get a second reading. It depends how far down the order paper it is on Friday.”
