Vladimir Putin is facing another crisis after Russia lost another 10,000 troops who were killed or injured over just seven days, according to new statistics from Ukraine.
It brings the total number of casualties suffered by the Kremlin to 690,720 since the start of the invasion in February 2022, Ukraine’s General Staff said.
The figure included 1,680 fighters said to have been killed or injured in the past 24 hours, and a total of 10,490 over the previous seven days, Kyiv said.
The figures have not been independently verified and the Russian Embassy has been contacted for comment.
The Kremlin usually disputes any casualty counts released by Ukraine and does not release regular updates on purported Ukrainian casualties.
However, on Monday it claimed that Ukraine suffered more than 2,000 casualties on the front lines in the northeast and east of the country in the previous 24 hours.
It was reported by the Wall Street Journal in September that the combined casualty count for both countries was about one million since the start of the war in February 2022.
One of Russia’s military tactics is said to be to push forward at all costs with military personnel an expendable asset, known as “meat grinder” tactics.
Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the Chief of the Defense Staff for the British military, has said it would likely take the Kremlin five years “to reconstitute the Russian army to where it was in February 2022.”
