US nuclear defence's 'gaping holes' exposed as expert warns of possible 'Armageddon'

America’s nuclear defence is riddled with “gaping holes”, sparking fears of an “Armageddon”, experts have cautioned.

The stark reality is that a nuclear war could obliterate civilisation within minutes, and the US’s current defence technology is alarmingly inadequate, according to specialists.

Author Annie Jacobsen painted a grim picture in her latest research, suggesting that multiple weapons of mass destruction with nuclear capabilities could decimate over two billion people globally.

In her new book, ‘Nuclear War: A Scenario’, Jacobsen provides a harrowing depiction of the intricate decision-making and protocols world leaders would confront during a nuclear crisis, issuing a dire warning about the sheer destructiveness of nuclear warfare.

Despite the advancements in defence technology, she spotlighted considerable failings in capabilities, raising concerns about the reliability of interception systems and satellite tracking.

Jacobsen revealed: “The gaping holes, interestingly, exist in technology. It’s shocking that in 2024, you might think the technology would have filled in the holes – but, instead, they’ve created worse holes. And when we say ‘holes,’ we mean the potential for disaster.”

She also criticised the flawed logic of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD), arguing that the reliance on the threat of mutually assured destruction instigates a dangerous cycle of escalation.

Instead, she championed diplomatic efforts and multilateral treaties as the only viable solution to reduce the threats of nuclear proliferation and warfare.

Highlighting the perils and intricacies of nuclear conflict, Jacobsen underscored the critical importance of international collaboration and diplomatic efforts to avert such disastrous outcomes.

Touted as a “non-fiction thriller,” Jacobsen’s book is the result of “dozens” of interviews with nuclear weapons experts.

It boasts of being “the only account of what a nuclear exchange would look like”, offering readers a glimpse “up to the razor’s edge of what can legally be known”.

Jacobsen mapped out the frenzied sequence that unfolds from the instant a radar blip suggests an imminent nuclear strike.

She then examined the intricate governmental ballet required to achieve flawless execution across agencies responsible for missile interception, diplomatic negotiations, emergency management, and ensuring the continuity of government operations.

Jacobsen has sounded the alarm on the escalating nuclear peril, citing Russia’s aggressive stance in Ukraine and unsettling pronouncements from figures such as Donald Trump.

She emphasised the critical need for composed leadership and a cohesive international stance to counteract the “mad king” theatrics that could plunge us into catastrophe.

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Jacobsen expressed her concerns: “I don’t think since President Kennedy has there been someone in office who has been so educated about the absolute dangers, not just of nuclear war but of rhetoric. […]

“Whether or not anyone’s madman-type rhetoric is coming from a place of ignorance or information doesn’t matter; nuclear sabre-rattling is profoundly dangerous. […] If you have a mad king in office, it would behove the entire world to make clear that that mad king’s behaviour is unacceptable.”

Jacobsen utilised historical simulations like the Proud Profit scenario to demonstrate the inevitable harm of a nuclear conflict, asserting that “[…] There are no good scenarios in a nuclear war scenario.”

She added: “We, the public, now know that no matter how nuclear war begins in various scenarios-whether NATO’s involved, whether China’s involved, whether it’s a tactical weapon or a strategic weapon-it ends in a nuclear apocalypse.”
