The pizza franchise, which operates more than 450 outlets across the UK, ceased serving two popular condiments due to health and allergy hazards.
Since its founding in 1984 in Jeffersonville, US, Papa John’s has become one of the nation’s most popular chains.
But alarm bells rang about some of its most popular dips, including Garlic and Herb Dip and Vegan Ranch Dressing, which possibly contain peanut traces and threaten individuals with allergies.
A spokesperson for Papa John’s commented: “At Papa John’s, customer safety is our top priority. Certain batches of our Garlic and Herb Dip and Vegan Ranch Dressing may contain traces of peanuts.”
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued several alerts in recent days regarding food products containing mustard powder imported from India that may have been contaminated with peanuts.
The Papa John’s spokesperson added: “Our 25g dips are included with pizzas, and we recently introduced a 100g version. If you have a peanut allergy, please do not consume these dips and dispose of them.”
They continued: “Our Vegan Ranch Dressing, used on products, may also contain traces of peanuts. If you have a peanut allergy, please avoid these items.”
“We are working quickly to resolve this issue. In the meantime, we will replace the Garlic and Herb Dip with our Special Garlic Dip, unaffected.”
As for other food recalls, the FSA has warned that it will likely issue more “wide-ranging” alerts and recalls as the investigation into contaminated mustard powder from India continues.
The watchdog recalled dozens of foods and condiments it believed might contain peanuts not listed on the label. The recalled dips, sandwiches, and salads, sold under various brand names and across various stores, contain mustard, which may contain traces of peanuts.
Rebecca Sudworth, Director of Policy at the FSA, said: “This remains a complex investigation, and we are continuing to work with Food Standards Scotland, relevant businesses, local authorities, and agencies to ensure the necessary measures are in place to protect consumers.
