Unblock your toilet in one flush using 1 kitchen staple – no plunger needed

Blocked toilets can be caused by excess toilet roll, limescale, grease or oil build-up, tree roots and people flushing non-flushable items.

Getting rid of a toilet blockage can be unpleasant, especially if it also smells unpleasant.

Rather than using chemicals, hot water or a plunger, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have shared a simple method that involves using a kitchen staple most people will already have in their homes.

It comes after a Facebook user posted on the group, ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’ asking for help unblocking her toilet.

They asked: “Help. My daughter has blocked the toilet! I’ve tried using the loo brush without success! What can I do before I have to ring the council? Thanks in advance.”

The post was inundated with responses but the most suggested method was to use cling film.

Marilyn Knott replied: “Cover in cling foil make sure there are no holes. Put the seat and lid down then flush. Good luck.”

Christine Griffin said: “Cover the complete bowl with cling film then flush. Water should rise up and clear the blockage.”

Adele Pitwell posted: “Cover the toilet in cling film leaving no gaps. Flush the chain and the cling film will rise with pressure, push down as the toilet is flushing onto the cling film. This should clear it.”

Tara Justine commented: “Put clingfilm across the top of the toilet so it’s airtight then flush.”

To use this method, simply cover the toilet bowl in a couple of layers of cling film until it is completely airtight.

Once the bowl is completely covered, flush the toilet. Don’t be alarmed if the cling film bubbles up, this is completely normal.

Press the air out of the bubble so it goes back down the toilet. This should clear any blockages.

Other suggestions for removing the blockage included using washing up liquid, hot water, a mop and a wire coat hanger.
