Ukraine downs 29 Russian drones as Moscow launches huge overnight attack

Ukraine’s military says it downed all 29 drones launched by Russia in an overnight attack.

The Ukrainian air force said Moscow launched the drones from Primorsko-Akhtarsk and Kursk Oblast in Russia.

The drones were shot down over the Odessa, Lviv, Mykolaiv and Poltava regions.

The air force said Russia also attacked Ukraine with a ballistic missile at Kharkiv Oblast.

“We are deterring Russian pressure and I thank each brigade and unit involved,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday.

“Russia wants to show that it defines the course of the war.

“Our task is to thwart Russia’s attempt to expand the war and to prevent the occupier from breaking the frontline or our diplomacy — our way of bringing a just peace closer.”

It comes a day after Moscow struck a lakeside resort in the country’s northeastern Kharkhiv region, killing at least 11 people.

On Sunday, Russia said it shot down 62 drones and several US-provided missiles launched by Ukraine at the Crimean peninsula and bordering Russian regions.

At least six drones reportedly hit an oil refinery in Slavyansk in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region.

Moscow launched an offensive in the Kharkiv region earlier this month.

The Kremlin’s troops sprang a surprise attack on May 10, making significant progress within days.

The army succeeded in seizing 278 square kilometres (107 square miles) between May 9 and 15, their biggest gains since 2022.
