The UK foreign office has warned Brits heading to a popular Christmas market destination to “remain vigilant”.
Christmas markets are a key part of the festive season for many Europeans, however, those heading off to Belgium are being warned that terrorist attacks could take place.
Belgium is a popular destination among UK tourists in the winter months as its towns and city’s host picturesque Christmas markets. Brussels, Ghent and Bruges are all hotspots during the festive season.
But now travellers are being advised to expect “an increased police presence” with the “Belgian authorities have successfully disrupted various attack plans” in recent years.
Since the fatal terrorist attack in March 2016, which killed 32 civilians and left 300 injured, the country has upped its terror precautions, particularly at busy terrorist times.
What is the most recent advice from the FCO?
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has issued an update for its travel guidance for the country this week, renewing information on the risk of terrorism, and demonstrations and strikes.
Brits hoping to immerse themselves in the Christmas ambiance are being reminded that “terrorists are likely to carry out attacks in Belgium”.
These could be “indiscriminate” and could happen in the following locations: public transport; national and international travel hubs; music, sporting and cultural events; government buildings and international institutions; and places of worship and religious sites.
The FCDO added: “You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities.” It warned travellers that the Belgium government has set the national threat level at 3 – ‘serious’.
It said: “The Belgian authorities have successfully disrupted various attack plans, making a number of arrests in recent years… You can expect to see an increased police presence, and additional safety measures may be in place. Be aware of your surroundings and follow the advice of local authorities.”
UK tourists are also reminded that demonstrations and strikes are likely in major cities, especially in transport hubs and the Schuman (EU quarter) in Brussels. It warns that “there is a risk of unrest and violence” even though more demonstrations are peaceful.
