Tyson Fury falls victim to 'Drake curse' in Oleksandr Usyk fight

Tyson Fury has become the latest athlete to fall victim of the infamous ‘Drake curse’, after the musician placed a bet on the Gypsy King to defeat Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia. Fury and Usyk finally settled their differences on Saturday in Riyadh.

And it was Usyk who was crowned undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, after defeating Fury via a split decision. One man who had hedged his bets with Fury was Canadian artist Drake, who placed a whopping $565,000 on the Englishman to get the job done.

It was not to be, however, and Fury is not the first fighter to have failed to land a bet for the musician. More recently, Drake had backed Francis Ngannou to defeat Fury at the same venue at the end of last year, however it was the Gypsy King who came away with victory.

The so-called curse does not just lie with boxing though, with Drake seen on numerous occasions wearing the shirts of sports teams who went on to lose – including the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. It had however been claimed the curse had been lifted after Drake correctly backed Alex Pereira to win at UFC 300.

His bad luck returned on Saturday though as Fury fell to the first professional defeat of his career. Things started well for the Gypsy King in the eagerly-anticipated bout, having appeared to take control at the halfway stage.

Fury was left in shock in round nine though, as he was brutally caught by his rival and left dazed in the ring before being saved by the bell. He remarkably resettled himself and managed to battle his way through all 12 rounds, before ultimately losing through the split decision.

Despite defeat, the Gypsy King already has his eyes on gaining revenge after calling out his rival for a rematch in the aftermath – as stated in the fight contract. Fury also admitted he felt he had done enough to win the fight. “I believe I won that fight, I think he won a few of those rounds but I won the majority of them,” he said in the ring.

“His country as at war, so people are siding with the country at war. Make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion. I’ve had a split decision loss with a little man. Good luck, God bless you.”
