Progressives in Congress trained more public criticism on the Democratic Party’s centrists, and the House’s official Twitter account hit back with a late-night tweet attacking Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff.
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for caving to Republicans on a bill to fund US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers at the southern border, calling the $4.6-billion legislation “horrendous.”
“The complete assumption on the Senate side was that Speaker Pelosi would take it to conference, and she didn’t,” Merkley reportedly said at the annual left-wing Netroots Nation conference Friday.
Meanwhile, Pelosi loyalists took a stab at Saikat Chakrabarti, AOC’s chief of staff, for his two-week-old tweet slamming moderate Rep. Sharice Davids (D-Kan.) for “enabl[ing] a racist system.”
“Who is this guy and why is he explicitly singling out a Native American woman of color?” tweeted the House Democrats’ official account. “Keep Her Name Out Of Your Mouth,” the post continued.
“I’m not interested in substance-less Twitter spats,” Chakrabarti posted in response.
AOC has been tangled in a heated dispute in recent days, after blasting Pelosi for being “outright disrespectful … of newly elected women of color.”
