Rep. Elise Stefanik will be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations when Donald Trump becomes the nation’s 47th president in January.
Trump confirmed Monday that the representative of the 21st congressional district in upstate New York will be part of his cabinet upon being confirmed by a Republican-led Senate.
The GOP took back the Senate last week on the coattails of Trump’s electoral victory.
Stefanik, 40, would succeed President Biden’s ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, in that position. One of the people who held that post under Trump’s previous presidency was Nikki Haley, who challenged him for the Republican Party presidential nomination in 2024. The incoming president has made clear she will not be a part of his second administration.
Stefanik has been steadfast in her loyalty to Trump. The Albany native told NBC News earlier this year she wouldn’t commit to certifying the presidential election if Trump lost. She also expressed sympathy for people who stormed the Capital on Jan.6 during that interview.
“I have concerns about the treatment of Jan. 6 hostages,” Stefanik said.
She also spoke at Trump’s controversial Madison Square Garden rally shortly before the election where a comedian called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage.”
Stefanik became an outspoken critic against antisemitism on college campuses throughout Israel’s war with Hamas, which began when the Gaza-based terror network attacked Israeli civilians on Oct. 7. She has also been vocal in criticizing the Biden administration’s handling of that issue and others.
Stefanik was 30 years old when elected to congress in 2014. No woman had won that position at a younger age. She currently serves as a senior member of the Armed Services Committee.
Trump announced Sunday that former ICE director Tom Homan will join the Trump Administration as “Border Czar.”
