The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has shared a list of the best-selling cars in the UK throughout 2024, with the best-seller holding onto its top spot for another year.
More than 1.95 million cars were sold over the 12-month period, an increase of 2.6 percent over 2023 figures, with the majority of buyers choosing SUVs and crossovers over more traditional alternatives like saloons and estates.
According to the organisation’s study, the best-selling car of 2024 was the Ford Puma, with 48,340 examples of the company’s entry-level model leaving dealer forecourts throughout the year.
Whilst many Brits still miss the long-running Fiesta, the Puma’s cute looks, long list of standard equipment, and sizable boot make it a strong choice for young families.
Sales of the Puma could continue to increase in 2025, with Ford set to introduce a fully-electric version to complement the mild hybrid powertrain currently offered.
Another model that was particularly popular during 2024 was the Kia Sportage, with Brits buying an impressive 47,163 over the 12 months.
A part of the Korean brand’s range since 1993, the latest fifth-generation version of the Sportage offers striking looks, a roomy interior, and a range of powertrains including an acclaimed hybrid.
The model has been growing in popularity over the past decade, overtaking a number of particularly competitive rivals from Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
Finally, the Nissan Qashqai was ranked as the UK’s third-best-selling model of 2024, with the company selling 42,418 examples.
Built in the company’s Sunderland factory, the Qashqai is known for offering drivers good build quality and particularly comfortable on long journeys.
The Qashqai’s smaller stablemate, the Juke compact crossover, also sold well throughout the year, featuring fourth on the SMMT’s list.
