Toddler killed in hit and run outside Hartford laundromat; cops seek BMW

Authorities in Connecticut are on the hunt for a BMW driver accused of running down a toddler — who’d wandered out of a nearby Hartford laundromat — and then fleeing the scene.

Officers were called late Monday to the area of 36 New Britain Ave. to investigate reports of a hit-and-run, the Hartford Courant reported. When they arrived on the scene shortly after 11 p.m., they discovered a young girl, about 18 months in age, unresponsive just outside the business.

She was rushed to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

So far few other details have been released, but Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said authorities believe the toddler exited the local laundromat through an open door and then walked into the nearby street, where she was hit. Her name has not yet been released.

Authorities on Tuesday continued to search for the driver involved, who was behind the wheel of a 2013 black BMW 328xi at the time of the deadly incident. Police said the vehicle also had a Connecticut plate with the number BD98328. The vehicle has not been reported stolen, Boisvert noted.

After striking the child, the sports car sped off, traveling westbound along New Britain Avenue, according to authorities.

The Hartford Police Crime Scene Division responded to the scene and have since taken over investigation, which remains “active and ongoing,” Boisvert said.

Anyone with any information has been asked to call the Hartford Police Department Tip Line.
