Wheeler Dealers presenter Mike Brewer has suggested some parts of Europe are behind on the transition to electric cars with just years to go before a petrol and diesel car ban.
Mike has just travelled across Europe filming for the Wheeler Dealers World Tour TV series and admitted “EVs are not featured anywhere”.
The presenter of the classic car restoration series stressed there are almost no battery-electric models in certain “major cities” on the continent.
He highlighted Poland as a perfect example of where there has been limited take-up of EVs compared to combustion models.
The Wheeler Dealers presenter made the admission while speaking as part of a panel of other used car excerpts on Car Dealer Podcast Live.
When asked whether the UK was backwards on its switch to EVs compared to other nations, Mike replied: “I disagree that we are behind.
“I’ve just done a World Tour and I’ve done a couple of laps of this earth. Wherever we went EVs are not featured anywhere.
“I’ve just come back from Poland this weekend. You don’t see it in major cities like Warsaw and Poznan where I was this weekend. Everyone is still driving a diesel Volkswagen Passat.”
As of June 2024, Poland had only registered 68,792 zero-missions models for passenger, delivery, and heavy-duty vehicles.
Meanwhile, data shows there are just over 6,500 public charging stations across the country.
In comparison, there are now almost two million EVs registered in the UK and over 70,000 charging plugs.
According to Stazon, it is believed the UK is tenth in the list of market share for pure electric car registrations in Europe.
As of 2023, EVs made up 16.5 percent of the overall vehicles on the road, behind Germany (18.2 percent) and Belgium (19.2 percent).
Norway topped the list with 81.8 percent of all models considered to be electric machines.
