The world’s scariest bridge is 1,000ft high and “as thin as paper” but can support huge trucks.
Dadong River Cable Bridge is a large-scale infrastructure project in Chongqing, China. Videos of the bridge are constantly going viral for how frightening it looks.
It stretches 490ft over the river below at a height of 984ft and is able to support trucks of up to 45 tons while being only nine feet wide.
The bridge appears flimsy and narrow, with a tower at each end to support the main cables. The deck is suspended from these and made of steel and concrete.
It is only wide enough for one vehicle to cross at a time, with safety nets on each side to try and prevent disaster.
With no towers or inclined cables to provide additional support, the bridge is reportedly not the most stable and frightening to drive on.
TikToker WorldMestry shared a video about the “thin as paper” bridge, saying drivers using it must be “incredibly brave”.
A user commented that “just watching the video made me nervous” and others marvelled at the strength of the bridge with one saying that “Chinese engineering is breathtaking”.
Dadong River Cable Bridge is a vital transportation link between provinces for vehicles and pedestrians, as well as being a scenic attraction, offering views of the surrounding landscape.
It is intended as a temporary project to await the construction of the Shuangbao Bridge. When completed, this will stretch over both the Dadong and Xiahegou Rivers.
To build it, workers needed to be able to reach the small mountain which will support the centre arches of the bridge – hence the building of the bridge.
