New data has revealed the most hyped cities in the world for tourists to visit. Research conducted by FreeSpinsTracker has crunched the numbers to work out which city gathers the most interest on TikTok and can be considered for the purpose of the analysis, as a result, the most popular city to visit.
Europe dominated the “most hyped” cities list, with five locations in the top 10.
The city earning the top spot had over one billion combined hashtag views, with over half a billion less than the second-place city.
A spokesperson for FreeSpinsTracker said: “Social media has become an integral part when planning a trip and deciding the destination. TikTok especially has become a go-to platform for travel inspiration.
“This study highlights which cities and economies can benefit from such exposure and expect to see an uptick in tourism levels. It is interesting to see such a varied list of destinations and it will be particularly interesting to see if tourism levels continue to grow thanks to social media.”

A tranquillity lies beneath the energetic exterior, with the Hamarikyu Gardens, Shinjuku Gyoen National Park and Ueno Park just a selection of Tokyo’s serene green spaces that are very popular with tourists and locals alike.
The Japanese National Tourism Organisation uses social media to attract tourists to Japan, including hashtags like #visitjapanjp. The yen’s historic collapse meaning cheaper travelling experiences, coupled with the post-pandemic surge in global tourism, has sparked interest in the city like never before.
New York, USA. In the ninth spot is New York, with 24,338,600 hashtag views on TikTok. New York is another city for the foodies, and trying a New York-style pizza slice should be on everyone’s list.
NYC has been called the media capital of the world, being home to some of the most important newspapers and publishing houses.
It has a unique urban structure, the original skyscrapers’ city, with iconic buildings including the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center and the Statue of Liberty.
Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul ranks as the eighth-most hyped city. The Turkish has 28,580,845 hashtag views on the video-sharing platform, with tourists falling in love with the breathtaking bazaars and tasty cuisine.
From baklava to kumpir, the streets of Istanbul are heaven for foodies. #Istanbulstreetfood alone has 2.8 million views on TikTok and is the perfect place to start when looking for the city’s traditional cuisine.
Rome, Italy. With 29,500,000 hashtag views, Rome is the seventh-most hyped city to visit.
Home to the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain, Rome has no shortage of historical attractions. You can also cross the Tiber river to see the wonders of the Vatican, including St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, home to Michelangelo’s famous frescos.
Paired with an iconic Italian gelato or freshly poured espresso, there is no better place to be.
Bangkok, Thailand. The sixth-most hyped city on the list is Bangkok, which has 34,386,100 hashtag views, whether it’s to live the life of the party or be fully immersed in the bustling streets and floating markets.
Bangkok is steeped in history, so visiting the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and admiring the spectacular Grand Palace is a must.
TikTok is a growing trend in Thailand as a whole, with the country considered among the leading for social media in Southeast Asia.
