The Walking Dead fans followed Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) diligently throughout his nine-season journey.
Eventually, however, all good things must come to an end, and Rick succumbed to his wounds – but not how fans were expecting.
After receiving a supposedly fatal wound whilst escaping from a huge horde of walkers, Rick was captured by a helicopter – which was summoned by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh). Since then it was announced Rick would be starring in a number of TV movies which would complete his story.
Fear the Walking Dead debuted its first episode of season five this month, and dropped a hint about Rick’s whereabouts.
Viewers noticed some of the walkers’ overalls held the same insignia that was plastered on the side of the helicopter which took him away.
While this sparked a number of rumours about the whereabouts of Rick, show boss Scott Gimple has now spoken out to discuss the future of the show.
Speaking to Alternative Mindz, Scott explained The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead would remain “separate entities”.
He went on: “Dwight is the thing they have in common most recently.”
However he did go on to say the easter egg would lead to something significant “outside of both shows”.
Scott said: “There’s a little thing that turns out into kind of a big thing that connects to something outside of both shows, which people will be seeing.
“But they’re two different shows. Two crazy different shows in a lot of ways.”
While Scott’s comment about “something outside of both shows” could certainly be pointing towards the TV movie Rick is going to star in, why does it sound so ominous?
Rick has never had the best luck against his antagonists throughout the series so far, so could this strange coincidental symbol mean something bigger than fans may expect?
And if so, will it ever eventually lead to Rick being reunited with his friends and family after the five-year time-jump?
Rick’s survival came as a shock to many people – but not The Walking Dead’s creator Robert Kirkman.
However, in the comic book source material, Rick just died via a number of gunshots – an event which sent fans into turmoil.
He recently spoke out in the back pages of his comic book to explain the death of his story’s main character.
During the essay, he said: “So I feel compelled to state for the record that the events of this issue were in no way a reaction to that… This has been planned for a LONG time.
“It doesn’t make it any easier, but it’s been something I’ve been getting more and more used to as the years got down to months and then weeks… I knew it was coming.”
The Walking Dead season 10 is set to return to AMC later this year.
