The rich European country loved by Brits where you can't flush toilet for 9 hours a day

British tourists heading to Switzerland are being warned about a surprising rule by a travel expert.

The popular European holiday destination enforces “quiet hours” in some areas, meaning flushing the toilet along with other noisy activities is banned for as many as nine hours each night.

The restriction has caught many visitors off guard, especially those staying in rented apartments or Airbnb properties, according to travel expert Faye Guest.

Guest, who works with the youth travel agency KILROY, said: “Noise pollution is a big deal in Switzerland.

“It’s taken very seriously, and you don’t want to be caught out flouting this societal rule.”

She added: “Peace and quiet is highly valued.”

She went on to explain that local authorities enforce strict quiet hours, known as Ruhezeiten, from 10pm to 7am.

“In some apartment buildings, it’s even prohibited to flush the toilet during these quiet hours,” she said.

The restriction is aimed at maintaining peace in Swiss communities, and it’s not limited to flushing.

Guest explained: “Activities like hoovering and playing loud music are also best kept to a minimum during this time.”

Many holiday rentals include this detail in the fine print, so Guest recommends that visitors double-check to avoid any issues.

She advised: “Given that many Airbnb’s and tourist residencies in Switzerland are apartment rentals, make sure you read the small print.”

This unusual rule is especially important for tourists who may not be familiar with local customs.

Guest said: “You don’t want to spend your time dealing with complaints. It’s time much better spent enjoying fondue and exploring the beautiful scenery the country has to offer.”
