The major international airport that's getting a huge £2.5bn overhaul

Perth Airport, in Western Australia is to undergo a huge redevelopment costing a whopping AU$5billion (£2.55bn). After years of planning, construction finally began earlier this month.

The city is one of the most isolated in the world but is also a major connection point for Australia and the rest of the world.

Its airport is an important travel destination which serves millions of people every year and is known as a major international air hub – so an upgrade is much needed.

Jason Waters, Perth Airport CEO, ran through a list of improvements planned as part of the upgrade. He said some of the biggest changes will be the addition of two multi-storey car parks, a new terminal, an expanded international terminal and a new runway.

The project is being completed by construction partners, West Coast Civil and Perkins Builders.

Plans will also see an upgrade to the international gate and self-service kiosks for airport procedures, with some upgrades already completed.

Australian airline Qantas and Perth Airport have teamed up and formed a commercial agreement. Once terminal one is complete, expected to happen in 2031, Qantas will move into the new terminal. The new runway is expected to be complete by 2028.

The airport is seeking EOIs (Expression of Interest) for the role of lead consultant on the new terminal and is hoping to create a shortlist of five candidates.

In August 2024, more than 1.4 million passengers passed through the airport with figures increasing each year showing the importance of development.

It is expected that the new terminal will boost opportunities for travelling to and from the airport and will boost Perth Airport as a top international airport contender.
