A major European country is constructing a mind-blowing underground and underwater road mega-project that is set to break records for being the longest and deepest.
The Rogfast Tunnel in Norway will connect the municipalities of Randaberg and Bokn in Rogaland county, which are separated by a large body of water.
Travelling from Trondheim in the mid-north to Kristiansand on the south coast currently takes around 21 hours due to the necessity of taking a ferry, and the tunnel promises to cut the journey down to just 11 hours.
As per Ground Engineering, the twin tube tunnels will also plunge deep underground, reaching a maximum depth of 392m below sea level.
Rogfast will replace the seven ferries currently used to transport people across Boknafjord.
It will also help connect Stavanger, a city in the south crucial for Norway’s North Sea oil industry, to the more northern city of Bergen which also has a strong oil industry as well as its fishing, as per World Highways.
Long stretches of the route will be either above ground or underwater, with the latter taking some 35 minutes to drive through.
Work on the tunnel began in 2018 with the construction of two access tunnels, but it will not be ready for many more years.
The B1M reports that the Norwegian government will provide around 40% of the £36-billion project, with the remainder recouped from toll fees.
