The Handmaid’s Tale season three, episode 13 was released on Hulu today (Wednesday, August 14) at midnight ET. Fans of the dystopian show were desperate to know how June Osborne’s (played by Elisabeth Moss) ambitious plan to help 52 children and their Marthas escape to Canada would work out. Here’s a quick recap of what exactly happened in Mayday on Hulu.

What happened in The Handmaid’s Tale season 3, episode 13?

The season finale of The Handmaid’s Tale begins with a flashback to when June was first captured and taken to the Red Centre.

Pushed onto a truck with other terrified women, the harrowing scene sees June traumatised as mothers are ripped away from their children.

The meaning of this becomes clear when the episode flashes forward to June thinking about how she will begin her plan to get 52 children out of Gilead tonight.

One little girl shows up at the house early and June develops a close bond with her as she explains what it means to be free of Gilead.

However, all does not seem to be going to plan as the Martha who brought her runs away from the home and is spotted by guards.

Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) tells June he is pulling the plug on the plan because it has become too dangerous.

June refuses, telling Lawrence in no uncertain terms: “It’s not your decision. You are not in charge. I am.”

Alongside the storyline of the June’s plan to remove the children, viewers also get a glimpse at what is happening to Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) in Canada.

Fans will remember that the in previous two episodes, Serena turned in her husband Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) to the Canadian authorities in order to see baby Nichole.

She made a deal of immunity with Mark Tuello (Sam Jaeger) for her war crimes, but in a scene with Fred, Tuello is made to go back on his decision.

Fred betrays Serena and reveals her crimes, including forcing June and Nick (Max Minghella) to have sex in order to have a child.

This leads the Canadian police to arrest Serena while she is having a supervised visit with baby Nichole.

Back in Gilead, Lawrence tells June that he will not come with them to try and escape Gilead, instead remaining to “clean up [his] own mess.”

After the conversation, June, the Marthas and the children begin their journey into the woods towards the airport they will use to escape.

The group safely makes it to the airport before a police car pulls up and begins searching the area they are hiding in.

As a result June decides to sacrifice herself to allow the Marthas to escape with the children, distracting the authorities by throwing rocks at them.

June runs through the forest with a guard on her tail, shooting her before she pulls the gun on him and kills him.

The scene cuts to Rita (Amanda Brugel) landing safely with the children in Canada and reuniting with Moira (Samira Wiley), Emily (Alexis Bledel) and Luke (O-T Fagbenle).

The final scene of the series cuts back to June in the forest as she remembers being in the park with Luke and Hannah (Jordana Blake) before the war began.

At the end, a group of Handmaids led by Janine (Madeline Brewer) find June and carry her away from the forest as the third season comes to a close.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 is currently available to stream on Hulu with episodes released weekly on Sundays on Channel 4.
