As gardeners gear up for the summer growing season, many are battling a common enemy, slugs and snails.
These pests can wreak havoc on tender plants and vegetables, leaving gardeners frustrated and searching for effective solutions.
Gardening expert Simon Akeroyd offers a simple yet ingenious tip to reduce slug and snail damage using nothing more than a damp plank of wood.
In a recent Tiktok video, Akeroyd explained his method, pointing out its simplicity and effectiveness.
“If you see a slug or snail damaging your veggies, place a damp plank on the edge of the bed border. If it’s dry, give it a quick soak,” he advised.
Akeroyd recommends using thicker planks, as they retain moisture better and provide a more attractive habitat for slugs and snails.
“Planks work best in shadier ends of beds,” he added, noting that these areas typically offer a more suitable environment for the pests.
Slugs and snails are naturally drawn to damp, shaded environments.
By placing a soaked plank in the garden, gardeners can create an irresistible lure for these pests.
Overnight, slugs and snails will gravitate towards the moist underside of the plank, seeking refuge.
In the morning, gardeners can inspect the plank and find loads of slugs and snails clinging to the underside.
“It’s a simple and effective way to gather these pests in one place,” Akeroyd said.
“You can then relocate them to areas where they won’t eat your veggies.”
Check the planks daily to ensure slugs and snails are being captured and relocated regularly.
Use several planks in different parts of the garden to cover more ground and attract more pests.
Ensure the planks remain damp, especially during dry periods, to keep them attractive to slugs and snails.
