The beautiful European seaside town that looks like it's about to fall off a cliff

Among the numerous stunning European seaside towns and villages that thousands are preparing to visit, the commune of Bonifacio stands out as an exceptional choice.

Perched on the southernmost point of the Mediterranean island, Bonifacio is celebrated for its breathtaking clifftop citadel, often referred to as the “City of Cliffs”.

The Corsica town is battling against the forces of nature, with high winds, powerful currents, and frequent landslides causing significant erosion at the limestone cliff’s base.

This has resulted in a precarious overhang, putting as many as 30 houses in jeopardy of falling into the ocean.

Historical records show that settlements near Bonifacio date back to prehistoric times, but it was in the 9th century that the town truly began to flourish with the construction of the citadel and its foundations.

The town is divided into two sections: the old town and the Upper City, with the citadel situated in the latter.

The citadel’s walls and the historic town’s residences offer spectacular views and meandering streets filled with boutiques.

Over the years, the citadel has undergone restoration and once served as an administrative centre for the French Foreign Legion.

During the Second World War, German forces occupied Bonifacio until they were driven back to Bastia by Allied forces. Shortly after, Corsica was liberated.

The neighbouring island of Sardinia, which is part of Italy, is just a one-hour ferry ride from this picturesque town.

A striking sight awaits visitors to the old town of Bonifacio, where a massive limestone cliff known as the grain de sable has fallen into the sea.

The town is accessible via Figari-Sud Corse Airport, which is serviced by Air Corsica, British Airways, Swiss Air, Air France and other European airlines, and is just 20 minutes from the port.

According to ferryscanner.com, taxi fares from the airport are around €50 (£42).

Bonifacio is also reachable by road, with two routes connecting it to the rest of the island.

Ajaccio, the capital, is just over two hours away by car, while bus journeys from Ajaccio to Bonifacio take approximately four hours.
