Given this summer’s sorry weather, you may be forgiven for eyeing a retirement location that reliably reaches temperatures north of 20C on a semi-regular basis.
Well, look no further than Malta. The tiny Mediterranean island is a favourite amongst Brits looking to spend their golden years in the sun, no less because one of its two official languages is English.
The capital Valleta is dripping with history and the island boasts numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Express.co.uk unpicks exactly why you should consider relocating to Malta, when you’re career is behind you.
Valletta, the capital city, is stunning. Glorious architecture and sea views provides the perfect backdrop to your new life in the sun.
The city-scape includes St.Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, St John’s Co-Cathedral, St George’s Square and much more besides.
Add to that a host of charming bars, restaurants and cafes, and you’ll find there is more than enough to do for locals and guests.
And although the island itself is only 122 square miles, there is plenty to see beyond the boundaries of the capital.
A particular favourite amongst residents and tourists alike is Mdina. Known as the Old City or the Silent City, Mdina is a maze of winding stone streets and incredible history.
It was even the site of much of the filming of hit TV show Game of Thrones.
One visitor said of the city: “Where do I even start about the silent city. It’s the perfect day trip to relax and chill with the tranquility of the whole city. The silence of the city is truly breathtaking whilst absorbing the heritage and history of Mdina the silent city of Malta.”
Another said: “A very clean and nice little town, that you should visit, especially if you are a fan of medieval knight towns and of course Game of thrones tv series! Wonderful narrow and colorful alleys.
“Just wonder around with your camera standing by or just to feast your eyes!”
