The beautiful but small country loved by tourists that holds Africa's 'strongest passport'

When someone tries to think of the world’s strongest passport, Africa is unlikely to be the first continent that springs to mind.

Passports from many African countries rank low on global indexes and face restricted visa-free travel globally.

But which country holds the continent’s strongest passport?

According to Henley & Partners’ Index, that would be the stunning island nation of the Seychelles.

People from the Seychelles can travel visa-free to 156 countries, giving them more freedom than citizens of any other African country.

The country, which is loved by tourists worldwide, is made up of 155 islands and sits about 930 miles (1,500 kilometres) east of mainland Africa.

The Seychelles is also the smallest country on the continent as well as the least populated sovereign African country, with an estimated population of just over 100,000.

Tourists visit for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and unique wildlife. Each island has its own charm, from lively beaches filled with activities to quiet hidden coves perfect for a peaceful escape.

Nature lovers will also find plenty to explore. The islands are home to rare plants and animals you won’t see anywhere else, like the Coco-de-Mer palm tree and the giant Aldabra tortoises.

What’s more, the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see and is even believed by some to be the original Garden of Eden.

As far as the country’s culture is concerned, it has a mix of African, European, and Asian influences. Visitors can enjoy Creole food packed with flavour, local music, and colourful festivals.

Life there moves at a relaxed pace, which makes it a perfect place to slow down and enjoy the simple things.

For a small country with just over 100,000 people, Seychelles has achieved a lot. It’s the richest country in Africa by income per person and ranks the highest in Africa for quality of life.

Tourism is a big part of the economy, but the government has also worked hard to protect the islands’ natural beauty.
