Police investigating the attempted drowning of a 3-year-old girl in Texas have asked the “very intoxicated” woman accused of the attack to be charged with a hate crime.
The mother of the unidentified victim said Elizabeth Wolf, 42, made bigoted remarks at her family before going after the little girl and her 6-year-old son, who came to the U.S. from Palestine, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Texas.
The incident occurred May 19 during a dispute at an apartment swimming pool in Euless, roughly 20 miles west of Dallas.
Wolf, who a witness said was drunk, is accused of telling the children’s mother that her son and daughter aren’t American. She then allegedly tried grabbing the boy, who escaped with a lacerated finger, before forcing the little girl underwater.
The mom, identified only as Mrs. H, reportedly wears a hijab that was “snatched” from her head as she pulled her toddler to safety.
Wolf is currently free on bond.
Prosecutors are reviewing a request by Euless police to charge the suspect with a hate crime, according to The Associated Press.
CAIR is also asking prosecutors to charge the attack as an act of hate. The civil rights organization established a GoFundMe page alleging the incident “badly affected the father’s income as he had to accompany his wife and 4 kids in their appointments and daily errands because the mother was scared to go out with her kids alone.”
President Biden’s team said the president was “deeply disturbed” by news of the allegations against Wolf.
