Tetris Time Warp is the brilliant new game mode coming to Tetris Forever

If you’re a retro gaming fan, then Digital Eclipse is probably high on your list of favourite game developers.

Among other things, the studio has become famous for its gaming compilations and re-releases, working on the critically-acclaimed Atari 50, as well as Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story and The Making of Karateka.

Digital Eclipse puts a little more care into its retro gaming collections, presenting them like an interactive museum, complete with interviews, artwork and advertisements.

The additional context and extra information makes even the most ordinary game that little more interesting.

The studio is currently working on a Tetris collection called Tetris Forever, which has a November release date for PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Tetris Forever contains a selection of different Tetris games from the past 40 years.

This includes old 8-bit and 16-bit versions, as well as the handheld Tetris and various spinoffs such as Hatris and Bombliss.

Similar to previous Digital Eclipse releases, the games are presented within five interactive timelines.

According to the developer, this includes 90-minutes of documentary footage, including an exploration of the “lifelong friendship and creative partnership between Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and The Tetris Company founder Henk Rogers”.

Considering when and where the game was created, this should make for interesting viewing.

Of course, Tetris Forever also includes a brand new game created by Digital Eclipse. Titled Tetris Time Warp, the new game mode can be seen in the gameplay trailer below.

According to Digital Eclipse, Tetris Time Warp can be played solo or with up to four people in versus multiplayer.

The mode begins with users playing a modern version of Tetris. After reaching the next level, the game warps to a different era, where players will need to complete a challenge within a set time limit.

One minute you’ll be playing Tetris as normal, before suddenly being forced to clear one big bomb in a Bombliss style mode. It looks like a lot of fun.

In the versus mode, opponents won’t be able to attack until they’ve completed the retro challenge and warped back to modern Tetris.

Fans can check it out when Tetris Forever makes its debut on consoles and PC in November.
